Current Methods of Making Diamonds

Besides natural diamonds that have been formed and existed on Earth for a long time. Today, humans have researched and invented ways to make artificial diamonds to further supply a market where demand exceeds supply. Let's explore the ways to make diamonds.

What is the actual process of making diamonds?

First of all, we need to know why scientists have to find ways to create diamonds instead of continuing to mine them from nature?

What is a diamond

Diamond is a mineral. It is a gemstone and a mineral, so it has limits. One day it will certainly be depleted.

Where are natural diamonds mined from

Besides that, most diamonds are found in illegal mines and extracted through labor exploitation around the world. Diamonds mined at these mines are also called “blood diamonds”.

Therefore, people seek to manufacture diamonds partly to meet the jewelry market's demand. It is also to limit the amount of natural diamonds being mined in an “inhumane” way.

Current laboratory diamond production methods

The methods for producing diamonds today are all based on the principle of diamond formation in nature. So what are diamonds made from in nature?

Natural diamonds are a common form of carbon. Minerals containing carbon, when placed in an environment of high temperature and pressure, will form diamonds from that.

Currently there are two main methods of making diamonds: the chemical vapor deposition method CVD and high pressure high temperature HPHT.

CVD diamonds - vapor deposition method

CVD diamonds are formed from the chemical evaporation process of carbon gas compounds under the effect of plasma heat rays. This evaporation process continues until only carbon atoms remain deposited and develop into diamond.

HPHT high temperature pressure method

Diamonds formed by the HPHT method are made by placing carbon atoms in a laboratory environment with extremely high temperature and pressure. This method exactly recreates the natural process of diamond formation.

However, creating such an identical environment is extremely complex and expensive, leading to diamonds made by this method sometimes costing even more than natural diamonds.

.Therefore the quantity of these diamonds on the market today is also not large. So besides these two main methods, people are also exploring new ways to make diamonds that are easier to carry out and lower in cost.

Besides the above methods, what else can diamonds be made from?

Some other ways to make diamonds

How to make diamonds from graphite?

Why from coal?

Let's reverse the issue from the formation of natural diamonds.

Besides diamonds, graphite is also another common form of carbon. That is why when looking for ways to create diamonds, people immediately think of graphite.

Because diamond and graphite are two different forms of the same chemical element, carbon. Coal is not an isotope of carbon. Coal contains a lot of carbon, but that does not mean it is close to pure carbon. In addition to carbon, graphite also contains many oxygen atoms, nitrogen, and other atoms.

Therefore, when using high temperature and pressure to turn graphite into diamond, you will only get diamonds of terrible quality because there are too many impurities. A diamond with too many impurities will have its transparency affected. Impurities are also a factor capable of determining a diamond's color. And if these 2 factors are of low quality, that diamond cannot be highly valued.

However, recently scientists from the SLAC laboratory at Stanford University under the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science discovered a new method using the hydrogenation mechanism of graphene to create ultra-thin diamond sheets without requiring extremely high pressure. This method is a new step that opens hope for producing thin diamonds from graphite for industrial applications.

Making diamonds from pencils?

Making diamonds from pencil lead is also something many people think of because it is made from graphite. However, just like graphite, producing diamonds from pencils is very unlikely. If it does happen, they will only be tiny impurities like broken glass or mirror shards with no commercial value.

Because the characteristics are almost no different from natural diamonds, yet the cost is much higher.

In addition, some models used to simulate making a diamond can be made from paper. You can learn how to make a diamond from paper to create diamond models.
