Diamond Legends Through the Centuries

We have long known diamonds as expensive, luxurious jewelry. But have you ever heard of the legend of diamonds? Misfortune, disaster, or death are the curses rumored to originate from these beautiful gemstones. Are those rumors really true? Let’s explore it clearly with Jemmia in this article!

The legend of the Hope Diamond

Possessing the exquisite beauty of a blue hue, the diamond named Hope has captivated the diamond-loving world since its appearance. Let’s revisit the mysterious history of this diamond.

The origin of the Hope Diamond

The diamond legend says that: The Hope diamond  was discovered at the Golconda mine in southwestern India. This diamond was purchased by a French merchant, then sold to King Louis XIV. In 1792, the diamond was stolen from the Royal family. It then disappeared for several decades before reappearing in a smaller size. Some reports record that this diamond also once belonged to King George IV of England. And he was also forced to sell it to pay off enormous debts.

The diamond was later bought by politician Henry Thomas Hope. Since then, it has been named Hope. Mr. Hope died not long afterward. The diamond continued to pass through the hands of many other owners. In 1958, Hope came into the possession of “diamond king” Harry Winston. And he donated this diamond to the Smithsonian Museum.

Is there really a deadly curse from the Hope Diamond?

One of the world’s most famous gemstones thanks to its enchanting beauty, the Hope Diamond weighs about 45.52 carats. However, many people, despite possessing enormous wealth, still hesitate to buy it. Because the diamond legend says that Hope is cursed. So is there really a deadly curse from this diamond?

Although it is known that some owners suffered painful deaths, such as King Louis XIV and Queen Marie Antoinette being beheaded by guillotine, if the curse simply means that anyone who owns it dies early, then the Hope curse remains a mystery. Because not everyone who possessed it had to go through tragedy.

The story serves as a warning about morality and the sin of greed. Only those with pure hearts can escape a harsh fate. Instead of trying to sell it, generously giving it away is also a way to receive happiness in return. And that was exactly the case of jewelry king Harry Winston.

The diamond legend of the Kohinoor Diamond

Over many centuries, the legend of the Kohinoor diamond has continued to be passed down by word of mouth. What is so special about this diamond that gives it such a bloody history?

The origin of the Kohinoor Diamond

Kohinoor was first found at India’s Kollur mine. Initially, this diamond weighed more than 187 carats. It belonged to India’s Mughal dynasty. By 1739, the King of Persia invaded Delhi and seized countless treasures of gold, silver, and jewels. Among them was this diamond. After the Persian king died, Kohinoor was passed on to his grandson and then fell into the hands of Afghanistan’s King Ahmad Shah Durrani.

The diamond changed hands until the 19th century, when it fell into the possession of the Sikh Empire. This empire was later defeated by the British and had to present the diamond to Queen Victoria. When Queen Victoria died, the diamond legend  was passed down in turn to successive queens. Today, the Kohinoor diamond belongs to Queen Elizabeth II of England. It is carefully preserved in the Tower of London as part of the British Royal collection.

The bloody history of the Kohinoor Diamond

The Kohinoor is famous for the story that it can only belong to a woman or a god. If the owner is a man, bad luck will follow him, and he may even lose his life. Many believe that, like other blood diamonds
, Kohinoor carries historical curses, forcing anyone who owns it to be cautious.

It can be said that whether the diamonds above truly carry curses or whether it is merely coincidence, the mysterious legend of diamonds will likely continue to fascinate people far into the future. To admire the most beautiful and valuable diamonds today at Jemmia.
