Should You Buy Certified Diamonds or Uncertified Diamonds?

The pure, noble beauty of a diamond becomes even more prominent after it has gone through the cutting and polishing process. People evaluate the value of a diamond based on factors such as clarity, color, carat weight… These specifications are usually shown on a diamond grading certificate. So, should you buy a certified diamond or not? Follow the article below to find the answer.

Common types of grading certificates today

A grading certificate is the basis that helps people assess the value of a diamond most accurately. Through the grading certificate, you will know important specifications such as: weight, clarity, cut, structure… of the diamond. In Vietnam, there are currently two common types of grading certificates: international certificates from GIA (Gemological Institute of America), IGI (International Gemological Institute), and domestic diamond grading certificates.

GIA certificates are issued by the Gemological Institute of America. This is one of the most reliable certification types and is valid in many countries around the world. The two types of certificates currently issued by this organization are: GIA Diamond Grading Report and GIA Diamond Dossier.

Domestic grading certificates are currently limited to blister-pack certification. Due to technological limitations, they are not yet capable of laser-inscribing a serial number on the girdle of the diamond. Therefore, the number is only engraved on the outer blister pack and is only valid domestically. If you need diamond certification, you can visit some of the following centers: Vietnam Institute of Gems, Gold and Jewelry; Gemological Institute – Vietnam Gemstone Association, Gemstone and Gold Research and Testing Center (VGC)…

When holding a grading certificate in your hand, you should pay attention to the following prominent specifications:

  • Shape and Cutting Style: The shape and cutting style of the diamond. Through this, you will know whether the diamond is round, pear-shaped, or square… and whether the cutting technique applied is Brilliant, Emerald, or Princess…
  • Carat Weight: This specification lets you know the weight of the certified diamond in carats.
  • Color Grade: The diamond’s color grade on a scale from D to Z.

Should you choose to buy a certified diamond or an uncertified diamond?

This is probably the part that most people who are planning to buy a diamond care about the most. With the information about diamond grading certificates, you can surely see that certified diamonds are guaranteed in terms of quality. Therefore, if you resell them later, they will not lose as much value as uncertified diamonds. That is also why certified diamonds are usually sold at a higher price.

In addition, first-time diamond buyers should go to reputable stores to make a purchase. To be safe, you should choose diamonds with complete certification documents to avoid buying counterfeit, low-quality products. At the same time, the information on the grading certificate will make you feel more confident about the value of the diamond you intend to buy.
