What Is a Brown Diamond?

They are all gemstones, but not all types of diamonds are equally well received. In the past, Brown Diamond was shunned by the jewelry market for a long time. But times have changed, and today this diamond line is commonly used for many types of jewelry. Why is that? Let’s find out more in the article below.

Learn about Brown Diamond

Natural diamonds come in many different colors, creating diversity in the gemstone market. Each color tone carries its own characteristics, creating the defining value for the stone.

What is a Brown diamond?

Brown Diamond is a natural brown diamond like chocolate. In the early days of the gemstone industry, brown diamonds were only used to make abrasive grains. They were even neglected because their color was less attractive than other types.

By 1980, the owner of the Argyle brown diamond mine in Australia came up with a bold idea. Instead of selling them in rough form at a low price, they sent the brown diamonds to India to be cut into very small stones measuring one point.

These ultra-small brown diamonds were then introduced to the jewelry market. A large number of small brown stones attracted customers’ attention, creating more appealing selling prices. Thanks to clever marketing, the brown stone underwent a remarkable transformation in price.

Origin of the brown color

Brown diamonds, or Chocolate Diamonds, take more than 3 billion years to form. They are created from ultra-carbon particles under high temperature and pressure deep within the earth. The immense pressure deforms the crystal lattice and creates the grain structure of diamond crystals.

The color of brown diamonds is formed by the element nickel or by defects in the structural lattice. Under a microscope, many parallel lines similar to wood grain can be seen. When light passes through, it changes the crystal lattice, and because the stone can absorb only a certain amount of light, it is less sparkling.

Brown diamonds are becoming increasingly popular

For centuries, Brown Diamond was considered an unattractive stone because of its non-white color. Thanks to De Beers’ breakthrough idea, brown stones have secured a place in the gemstone world. Today, brown diamonds are used quite extensively in high-end jewelry lines.

Applications of brown diamonds in jewelry making

Brown diamonds are not just one type but are divided into many different color grades. Based on differences in color, they are classified into Champagne Diamond, Cognac, or Chocolate tones. In the jewelry industry, brown diamonds have become a new trend and are widely welcomed.

On the grading scale, the color of brown diamonds is divided into different groups. Levels K – M belong to the light brown group, N – R are very light, and S – Z are extremely light. Diamond color is an important factor affecting their value. A deeper color along with high clarity will help the stone achieve a higher selling price.

In addition to their natural color, treatment methods are also used to change the color of brown diamonds. Brown diamonds can be transformed into colorless or yellow diamonds to enhance the stone’s aesthetics.

Like other types, brown diamonds are classified based on color grade. This is the basic factor affecting their value in the jewelry market.

The Golden Jubilee Diamond currently leads in brown diamond weight at 317.40 carats. The stone was cut from a 3106-carat rough brown diamond and is valued at up to 12 million USD.

Brown diamonds are currently used in many jewelry designs, and their selling price is comparable to white diamonds. However, the value of each stone also depends on its actual quality and size.
