How to Untangle a Necklace Quickly and Easily at Home

A tangled necklace does not happen randomly, but is usually caused by the following main reasons:

• Necklaces that are too thin: Chains with small, delicate links are often more likely to twist together and form knots on their own when moved, especially during sleep.
• Improper storage: Keeping multiple necklaces together in one box or drawer causes them to rub against and twist into each other when moved.
• Lack of space: When necklaces are not straightened or neatly coiled, they can easily curl up and form knots inside a closed jewelry box.
• Long and layered necklaces: Long chain styles or necklaces with large pendants tend to get tangled more easily.

Baby powder works like a dry lubricant, helping reduce friction and loosen the links. 

• Step 1: Sprinkle a small amount of baby powder onto the tangled area.
• Step 2: Place the necklace on a flat surface, use two sharp needles or toothpicks to gently slide between  the knots, and slowly stretch the links apart.

This method is clean, safe, and easy to clean up with a dry cloth.

Method 2: Use cooking oil or baby oil

Oil creates the necessary slipperiness to help metal links slide past each other more easily.

• Step 1: Drop one drop of cooking oil (or baby oil) directly onto the knot .
• Step 2: Gently rub the knot by hand, then use a pointed object to slip into the smallest gap and begin loosening it.

Note: After untangling, wash it immediately with warm water and mild soap to completely remove the oil and avoid dust buildup.

Method 3: Use a sharp needle

This is the most basic method, ideal for small knots that are not too tight, taking advantage of a small centrifugal force.

• Step 1: Place the necklace on a flat surface, use your finger to hold one end of the chain in place, with the knot in the middle.
• Step 2: Use the tip of the needle to poke into the gap and gently shake the necklace. Do not try to pull both strands out at the same time, focus on each link and the tightest point of the knot.

Method 4: Make use of rubbing alcohol

Alcohol helps clean dirt and residue stuck between the links, then evaporates quickly.

• Step 1: Soak a cotton swab with rubbing alcohol and gently dab the alcohol onto the knot.
• Step 2: Wait a few seconds for the alcohol to dissolve the dirt, then use a sharp needle to untangle it as usual.

Using the lowest heat setting, the warmth can slightly expand the metal links, helping loosen them.

• Step 1: Place the necklace on a flat surface, turn on the hair dryer to the lowest heat setting.
• Step 2: Blow the knot for about 10 seconds. While the knot is still warm, use a sharp needle to untangle it.

Note: Absolutely do not use high heat, especially for gemstone jewelry.

• Handle gently and patiently: Untangling requires patience. Work gently and slowly, avoiding excessive force.
• Fasten the clasp: Always fasten the necklace clasp before storing it away. This helps prevent the two ends of the chain from touching and forming knots on their own when moved.
